BALK / Wij3.0

The beauty
BALK is quite literally more than a lamp as it serves as a shelf too, but most importantly it is a symbol. It shows that beauty can be created from some of the most undervalued elements of our society: waste and unemployment.

The lamps are hand-crafted out of 100% reused aluminium giving it a wonderful ‘wabi-sabi’-ish texture. This beautiful imperfection is highlighted by colourful finishes. and by proudly adding the initials of each maker. It can be wall mounted as a night light or used as a mini exhibition space for personal treasures.

BALK is a simple, circular concept and can be returned to Blooey when no longer needed. Also, the electric components can easily be disassembled to be re-used or repaired.

The good
BALK is a follow-up project from Blooey’s Design Doing training program that uses an actual design process and professional brainstorming tools to grow personal development. This workshop-based approach inspires (creative) confidence for those of us who have been a bit less fortunate in life and eager for opportunities.

After the first project with Wij3.0 the trainees shared their wish to continue working with Blooey and Remko designed BALK from the aluminium 6x6 cm profiles that where left over from the circular waste bin project for Provincie Zuid-Holland.

This project challenged the team from Wij3.0 to learn how to weld aluminium, which is very difficult compared to steel. It took many prototypes, but they did a great job!
